Improving population health takes time: data show our overall trend is in the right direction

Download our 2019 Data Trends Overview

We chose early on in our Bold Goal journey to measure the health of members through the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Healthy Days survey, in which members self-report both their physical and mental health-related quality of life over the previous 30 days. The survey gives us a point-in-time picture of what those members are currently experiencing. We trend each year’s survey results back to baseline year membership population characteristics to track progress.

This year, the number of Healthy Days among all of our Medicare Advantage members across all markets improved for the first time since we began benchmarking – with a modest decline in the average reported unhealthy days (how the CDC measures) from 13.44 to 13.42. In 2019, that translates to 816,000 more Healthy Days than those members would have otherwise experienced.

Members achieving 816,000 more Healthy Days is encouraging, but we cannot underestimate the value of time. Thanks to tight integration with our local community partners, we’ve seen remarkable work supporting communities. Once we establish roots and networks, grow our partnerships, and employ our strategy of deep community involvement in addressing health-related social needs, members are more likely to get the resources they need to improve their quality of life.

Members with chronic conditions gain Healthy Days

In some communities, we observed members with specific chronic diseases decrease their number of unhealthy days. We believe this is due to the success of our care management programs, which holistically address the health and social needs of members to help them achieve their best health. Specifically, members with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), coronary artery disease (CAD), and congestive heart failure (CHF) experienced a decrease in unhealthy days.

Bold Goal communities make a difference

In looking at Humana membership across the board, Medicare Advantage members in Bold Goal communities are experiencing fewer unhealthy days than those in non-Bold Goal communities.

Exceeding our Goal

Throughout 2019, Humana put increased emphasis on conducting health-related social needs screenings, discussing with members their needs such as having access to healthy food, transportation and social support. We entered into 2019 with a goal of completing one million screenings. With the help of numerous resources across the enterprise, we far exceeded that goal, achieving more than 2.6 million screenings.

Our new Associate Bold Goal is designed to inspire and motivate

Humana has never been content to rest on accomplishments. Our associate community reached Humana’s Associate Bold Goal by the end of 2018, reducing Unhealthy Days by 20% and giving associates 2.3 million more Healthy Days as a community. So upon reaching that milestone, an ambitious new goal was created to inspire everyone to go further: to achieve 500,000 more Healthy Days by the end of 2022. In addition to Healthy Days, our new Associate Bold Goal includes a team element: our target is for 90% of our teams to improve their well-being.

Translating the data from our Healthy Days surveys is encouraging because members are telling us their lives are changing for the better. It gives us renewed confidence that the more they engage with us and utilize the benefits, programs and services included in their Humana health plan, they’re living better, fuller lives and having more Healthy Days.
