Building trust through sustained actions
Humana’s annual Bold Goal Progress Report allows us to reflect on the progress made each year through our continued member and community focus. Years of building relationships and growing momentum within our businesses have given us the ability to support members’ unique needs, when they need it most. It’s why we built our enterprise strategy around member-centric, whole-person health.
From our grassroots efforts in our Bold Goal communities to our health plan benefits that include social support, our members found value in our products, services, proactive outreach and, more importantly, personalized and caring approach. And, when the pandemic struck, the people we serve trusted us to be there for them. We do not take that trust lightly.
Last year especially, our members depended on us to provide for their clinical, behavioral and social needs.
This is what the Bold Goal has always been about—giving back Healthy Days to the communities we serve. Creating measurable, positive health outcomes by addressing the root causes of poor health for both individuals and communities – that was something we needed to prove we could, and would do back in 2015.
Since then, we’ve embedded the Bold Goal approach into 16 communities across the country. Teaming up with community nonprofits, business leaders, local government officials and city councils, we joined in conversations and partnerships that required us to listen and learn. And then, we came back to the drawing board time and time again to figure out more and better ways to impact health outcomes and support initiatives that were important to sustaining communities. Those conversations led us to take a hard look at social determinants of health to understand how we can best connect community members to the necessary resources and support, building towards sustainable solutions.
Today we can report that, even in a pandemic year—when overall health status in the U.S. and globally declined—our members who had been engaged with us had no more unhealthy days than the year prior. Humana Medicare Advantage members maintained overall health-related quality of life in 2020, while experiencing more physically Healthy Days. Giving back Healthy Days to our members makes us want to work all the harder to support members in overcoming challenges in their daily lives.
Because of our Bold Goal, all Humana employees across the company are more aware of the role social needs have in our members’ health. We all share in the successes and challenges of our members and communities. We’ve built a culture of transparency. We’ve seeded programs with our partners that provide food, education, transportation, advice, social support and comfort.
What we hope you see within this report is the foundation of trust we’ve built with our members and communities. That trust has helped enable our passion for human care – where members find that we go above and beyond for them, making it easy for them to achieve their best health.
