AVP of Strategy Advancement for the Office of HESI
Tamara Smith is a passionate, nationally recognized healthcare leader, innovator and systems thinker that possesses a knack for integrating strategies to achieve health and social impact at multiple levels. As the National Associate Vice President of Strategy Advancement for the Office of Health Equity & Social Impact (HESI) at Humana, Tamara leads the strategy management office for the Health Equity & Social Impact organization, which includes strategic operations and ensuring organizational alignment with Insurance services and network providers. Understanding that health equity cannot be established without intentional community engagement, Tamara also oversees Humana’s national community engagement framework and national partnerships to address health equity. Prior to joining Humana, Tamara has led meaningful work over the past 20+ years focused on transforming and creating system level change through various Executive and Senior leadership roles in large healthcare systems, public health, the Arts, and corporate health.
Tamara often says that her alchemy is turning passion for equity into purposeful impact. She strives to exhibit and fulfill this passion through providing leadership in both corporate and community spaces. As a committed community leader and advocate, Tamara serves as a very active member of the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Rescue Mission. She also highlights the work of health equity practitioners across the nation through her podcast, Our Journey to Equity. Her work has received national recognition. She was named national Top 100 Under 50 by Diversity MBA Magazine, and she has been invited to share the impact of her work as a national speaker for several National Health Summits, the World Healthcare Congress and multiple Healthcare and Diversity Conferences.
Tamara earned her Bachelor of Science in Health & Exercise Science from Wake Forest University and earned a Master of Science in Health Promotion & Management from Nebraska Methodist College. Currently, Tamara is pursuing a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health. Tamara and her husband Cassiel are self-proclaimed foodies that reside in Charlotte, NC and enjoy an active lifestyle full of competitive family game nights with their two boys, Gabriel and Israel, and their Doberman, Luna.
Director of Health Equity Insights and Business Intelligence
Stephanie Franklin, MPS, is the Director of Health Equity Insights and Business Intelligence, leading work to improve the health of members and communities by eliminating the unjust, avoidable and unnecessary barriers in health and health care. Her team's work, within the Health Equity and Social Impact Team (HESI), is focused on bringing to light those social risk factors and non-medical needs that prevent members from achieving their best health. She is a published researcher and speaker on the topics of social determinants of health and health equity.
Stephanie joined Humana in 2014. Previous roles included leading clinical programs aimed at preventing and delaying progression of chronic disease. Prior to joining Humana, Stephanie was the Senior Legislative Aide for a Member of Congress. Stephanie has a Master of Professional Studies in Political Management from The George Washington University and a B.A. from Centre College. She lives in Louisville, KY with her husband and two sons.
Director of Health Equity Innovation, Solution & Transformation
Candy Magaña, MPA, currently serves as the Director of Health Equity Innovation, Solutions and Transformation on the Health Equity and Social Impact team at Humana Inc. In this role she leads a workstream dedicated to enterprise health equity innovation, employee and clinician learning and capacity building. Prior to this, Candy served as the Director of the Center for Primary Care Innovation and Transformation at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and has also held roles at Blue Shield of California, RubiconMD and the Center for Excellence in Primary Care at University of California, San Francisco. Candy completed her undergraduate studies in public health at the Johns Hopkins University and holds a Master of Public Administration from New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
Director of Medicaid Strategy & Business Innovation
Emily LaMaster serves as the Director of Medicaid Strategy, as part of Humana’s Health Equity and Social Impact team. In her role, she is responsible for national partnership strategy and program development, ensuring that health equity and innovation are represented in growth and state strategies.
Emily has been with Humana for 15 years, with experience in in product development, clinical product, management consulting, and Medicare benefit strategy and filing. She has a passion for integrating health-related social needs into healthcare delivery and has actively pursued that passion for the last nine years.
Emily received a bachelor’s degree in financial economics from Centre College and a master’s in business administration from Bellarmine University.
