Family-Focused Recovery Program with Volunteers of America

With an investment of $5MM, Humana has seeded the Family Focused Recover (FFR) outcomes fund managed by Quantified Ventures. This will help VOA sustainably scale its FFR program to provide comprehensive services to mothers with substance use disorder and their children.

About the program

FFR is one of the few programs in the country that combines intensive addiction treatment, behavioral health treatment services, and family support to address underlying concerns that inhibit physical, mental, and behavioral health. Additionally, these programs prevent family separation, provide prolonged care and support for mothers and infants, reduce the risk of relapse, and lead to fewer neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) and NICU births.

The ripple effect from Humana’s investment

This effort efficiently leverages capital to address a critical public health challenge that no single sector or organization can effectively tackle alone.

Through this partnership, Humana and Quantified Ventures will:

  • Create a dedicated FFR Fund, a first-of-its-kind vehicle designed to deliver high-impact health outcomes for pregnant mothers in priority states. This fund is designed to encourage further investment to drive toward scale.
  • Structure payment models between Humana and partner CBOs that enable efficient and predictable scaling of priority community-based programs, starting with FFR.
  • Generate model programs and outcomes data to inform policies that seek to shift the balance of healthcare spending toward human services that address social determinants of health to improve population health and well-being.
  • Deliver meaningful improvements in health and well-being to the thousands of individuals receiving services to combat substance use disorder and other health-related social needs.

One example of a successful Family Focused Recovery program managed by Volunteers of America is Freedom House in Kentucky. Christina Compton, a 2017 Freedom House graduate, shares her story.
