LowCountry Food Bank and Humana Healthy Horizons partner to feed over 4,000 children

LowCountry Food Bank, a nonprofit organization that serves 10 coastal counties in South Carolina reported, “food insecurity rates in 2020 among children [in their geographical area] was 18.2%, which represents about 55,000 children, and a 38% increase in food insecurity among children compared to 2019.” Humana Healthy Horizons in South Carolina recognizes the important work of addressing food insecurity and how combined efforts create sustainable solutions for members. Through a partnership with LowCountry Food Bank and their BackPack Buddies program, Humana Healthy Horizons is helping to alleviate weekend hunger among public school children with food insecurity by distributing backpacks full of nutritious food each Friday during the school year. Currently, 56 schools in South Carolina are participating in this program with approximately 4,000 children receiving food to live a healthy and active life. A 2021 community investment by Humana Healthy Horizons fed an additional 70 children this school year.
